Sky Woman character studies: Sea People
🧙🏽 Sky Woman is a character from Iroquois mythology that I’m adapting for a new story,
aimed at ages 8 and up (PG).
This page contains character studies of Sea People: Keya, Sedna, and Bank-X.
🐢 Keya is an original character loosely based on the World Turtle.
World Turtles appear in stories from the following American tribes:
Abenaki, Arapaho, Bloods, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Gros Ventre, Lenape, Maidu, Mohawk, Ojibwe, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Tewa, Tuscarora, Wyandot, Yokut.
The World Turtle “KurmaRaja” (Turtle King) appears in Hindu scripture as an avatar of Vishnu.
Keya means turtle in the Lakota language.
🧜🏽♀️ Sedna is Inuit ruler of the sea and an underworld called Adlivun.
The Inuit live around the North Pole, in Canada and Greenland.

🌀 Guabancex is the Caribbean hurricane goddess of the Taino people. She commands the wind.
🧚♀️ Atabey is the Taino zemi (powerful spirit) of fresh water and fertility.
The Taino were one of the first Native American tribes to encounter Christopher Columbus, along with the Lucayan and Arawak.
